What you pack for North Macedonia depends heavily on season and region — a summer lake trip and a winter ski weekend call for almost entirely different bags, and the country covers both within a few hours' drive.

Year-round essentials

Comfortable walking shoes for Old Town cobblestones, a light scarf or cover-up for visiting churches and monasteries (shoulders and knees should be covered), and a reusable water bottle — tap water is safe throughout.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Swimwear for Lake Ohrid, sun protection, and light layers for cooler mountain evenings if your itinerary includes Mavrovo or Berovo alongside the lake.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Proper winter layers and waterproof boots if visiting the mountains; ski gear itself isn't necessary to bring since rental is widely available at Mavrovo and Popova Šapka.

Shoulder season (Apr–May, Sep–Oct)

Layers are the theme — mild midday temperatures with cooler mornings and evenings, particularly noticeable around Lake Ohrid and in the mountains.

What you don't need to bring

Adapters for most of Europe (North Macedonia uses the standard Type C/F plugs), and any specialized gear for hiking or watersports — rentals are inexpensive and widely available at every major site.
