Where to ski
Mavrovo and Popova Šapka are the country's two main ski resorts, roughly an hour apart by driving time. Mavrovo is larger, with more varied terrain; Popova Šapka is smaller and closer to Skopje, better suited to a single-day trip. See our full comparison in Mavrovo vs. Popova Šapka.
Ski season and snow conditions
The season generally runs December through March, with January and February offering the most reliable snow cover. Conditions vary year to year — checking recent snow reports before booking accommodation is worth the five minutes it takes.
Gear rental
Both resorts have on-site rental for skis, snowboards, boots, and poles — there's no need to travel with your own equipment. Rental costs are noticeably lower than at major Alpine resorts.
Winter road conditions
Main highways are generally kept clear, but mountain roads toward Mavrovo and Popova Šapka can require winter tires or snow chains after heavy snowfall. If self-driving, check current road conditions before heading up, particularly after a fresh snowfall.
What else to do beyond skiing

What to pack
